Textbook of Biochemistry (Core Topics)

Textbook of Biochemistry (Core Topics)

A supplementary text for either one- or two-semester general biochemistry courses. Selected parts of the book can also be used for more specialized courses. While the book is designed primarily for students of biochemistry, it also serves students majoring in related fields such as chemistry, biology, and allied health curricula as well.

The book was written in response to a need encountered during the author's many years of teaching biochemistry when he realised that his students, both undergraduate and graduate, while having had some exposure to topics in the three broad areas of dissociation, kinetics, and energetics, consistently required considerable strengthening in these areas. Grasp of basic concepts needed to be reinforced, simple mathematical calculations explained, and application of this material to biochemical systems was achieved with difficulty.

The book serves as a companion to general biochemistry texts in use. It can be used in either a one- or a two-semester course sequence, and for either undergraduate or graduate students, since each topic is discussed in detail, progressing from basic concepts to advanced material and special biochemical aspects. The depth to which a particular topic is covered can be adjusted by the instructor and/or the student by including or excluding certain sections of the book.

Quantitative Analysis

Quantitative Analysis

The present book is a sequel to the authors Qualitative Analysis and Course of Qualitative Chemical Semi microanalysis. Therefore it does not deal with many theoretical questions which are fully discussed in these Books at equal length in a course of quantitative analysis. In all such instances merely a brief mention is made of the relevant principles and results with a Reference to the appropriate sections in the Textbooks of qualitative analysis. The question of physico-chemical methods of analysis and their place in a course of quantitative analysis is a very serious problem. Only two such methods are considered in detail in the book: colorimetric (visual) and electro gravimetric analysis. Conductometry potentiometry polarography and photocolorimetry are considered only in outline without descriptions of the methods or examples of determinations.
